This exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of George Nelson, one of the most influential figures in American design during the second half of the twentieth century. George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher presents more than 120 three-dimensional objects—furniture, cabinets, lamps, clocks, and more—including the “Coconut Chair” (1956), “Marshmallow Sofa” (1956), “Ball Clock” (1947), and “Bubble Lamps” (1952 onwards). These are supplemented by fifty-plus historical documents in the form of drawings, photographs, architectural models, and films.

The exhibition is organized in five areas, each addressing a particular topic: Nelson and the House; Corporate Design; The Office; Exhibition Design (focusing on Nelson’s work as head designer for the 1959 American National Exhibition in Moscow); and Nelson as Author, Editor, and Visionary”.
